Task 1.4: Development of cold formed steel (CFS) wall panels with improved structural performance and fire resistance

Objective:

Development of a new Cold-formed Steel (CFS) wall panels for light weight steel framed buildings with improved seismic and fire performance

Description:

In this project a new sheathing technique will be developed by different combinations of plasterboards, insulation, X-bracings etc. to improve the stability and increase the vertical & lateral load carrying capacities in order to withstand earthquake and wind loads safely as well as to increase the fire resistance rating (FRR) of the CFS wall panels. Load–deformation behavior & seismic response modification factor, R will also be investigated. Design guidelines will be prepared for CFS wall systems under lateral loadings. Theoretical studies will be carried out to identify a method for the prediction of shear capacity of CFS shear walls and the results obtained from the identified method will be compared with peak loads obtained from experimental tests. For load bearing wall systems & non-load bearing wall systems, full-scale size wall specimens will be prepared in the laboratory and tested under lateral loads respectively for assessing their seismic performance.

A detailed fire research study into the performance of LSF wall systems will be undertaken using full scale fire tests under axial loading to understand the behaviour of CFS walling systems under fire. CSIR-CBRI is equipped with a state-of-the-art Fire Research Laboratory in which full-scale specimens can be tested under loaded conditions.

In addition to these failure criteria, various buckling modes, joint configurations etc. will also be studied. Wall panels sheathed with traditional plasterboards such as gypsum, MgO etc. will also be prepared and tested for comparison with the new technique. The numerical study will be undertaken using a standard finite element program for validation of experiments.

  • A rational estimation of the seismic response modification factor, R for load-bearing CFS wall panels.
  • Design guidelines for CFS wall systems under lateral loadings
