Objective:
- To develop Eco-friendly corrosion inhibitors to improve durability of RC structural components
Description of Task:
Corrosion of reinforcement bars embedded in the concrete, particularly in thin precast concrete elements, leads to major durability problem due to low cover. To overcome this problem, one of the frequently used remedial measures is use of corrosion inhibitors. However, the commonly used inhibitors are toxic in nature and expensive. Thus, there is a need for replacing harmful inhibitors with cost-effective, environmentally friendly, non-hazardous alternatives. Because of their natural origin, as well as their non-toxic characteristics and negligible negative impacts on the environment, extracts of agro-forestry wastes/natural products and medical waste such as Heena, Neem, Eucalyptus, Bamboo, Penicillin’s, cefatrexyl etc. seems to be ideal candidates to replace traditional toxic corrosion inhibitors. In view of this, efforts will be made to develop and evaluate corrosion inhibitors from extracts of agro-forestry waste/natural products to improve durability of RC structures.
