Task 5.1: Design interventions for enhancement of robustness in traditional construction
Task Leader(s): S.K. Negi
Objective:
- To develop cost effective technologies for traditional construction in North eastern region
Description of Task:
Apart from modern constructions in urban and semi-urban areas, vernacular architecture and non-engineered, traditional construction techniques are widespread, and constitute a majority of dwellings in India. Hence, there is a necessity to quantify the resistance of such traditional construction, mostly in high seismic zones and other disaster risks and by performing full-scale tests to improve their resistance. Thus, promoting/ protecting our social and cultural heritage and at the same time incorporating the same in the structural system, will help in making disaster resilient structures.
Deliverables:
Design and development of cost effective technologies for traditional construction for mass housing
- Bamboo & timber trusses with jointing details
- Precast foundation for N-E hilly areas
- Improved Dhaba roofing technology
- Region specific traditional building designs (including materials and structural specifications)
